What makes gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable special

Located in the southwestern part of Uganda, Bwindi impenetrable National park is the leading tourism site when it comes to gorilla tracking experience. You must have read or visited a zoo and saw some apes which look just like a human being and you were told that it’s a gorilla but I doubt if it was a mountain gorilla because these rare primates cannot be kept in captivity. The only way through which someone can view them closely is by personally tracking them in their natural habitats.

It is estimated that there are about 900 remaining mountain gorillas in the world and half of these are found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with a total of about 480.The Park’s thick rainforest full of natural wonders and rare tree species have contributed to the attraction of the primates since they use them for feeding. The rainforests of Bwindi where the gorillas live throughout their lives are called impenetrable because of the thickness and the congestion of trees which make the place to look so dark even during the day. Many tourists wrongly think that impenetrable means that no one can move through the park but the fact is that there are marked paths through which trackers move as they search for the gorillas.

For the last few years, the park has attained a rapid increase in the number of visitors who come to track the mountain gorillas in their natural habitats of Bwindi. This has helped Bwindi to outshine other national parks in the country and those of the neighboring countries especially those with gorillas like Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Sometimes visitors come to carry out other activities like game viewing but on their safari in Uganda, they get enticed to extend their trip to Bwindi and have a look at the hard-to find human-like species.

When it comes to nature walks and gorilla trekking, Bwindi is the best place to go because of the presence of numerous groups and families which a visitor can track. These gorilla families include; – Nshongi group, Mishaya group, Nkuringo group, Rushegura group, Habinyanja group, Mubare group and Bitukura group. All these families are found at Buhoma area of Bwindi.

When is the best time to go gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

As you plan for a Uganda gorilla safari trip, you need to take note of the climatic changes and the best time to visit the park. Though some visitors might be lucky to trek the gorillas at anytime of the year even during rainy seasons, the best time to go gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable is during the dry season. This is because during a dry season the park is dry making it easy to access most of its areas on foot. The best time to visit the park for gorilla tracking is mid-December to February and June to September.

When in the park, a visitor does not worry about where to stay because there are various accommodations within and near the park and these include; – Lake Kitandara camp, Chameleon hill Lodge, Buhoma Lodge, Gorilla forest camp and others.

How to get there

Depending on one’s wish, Bwindi can be accessed by both road and air. By road, it is about 545km from kampala in the south west while as by air, a flight from Entebbe international Park to Kihihi airport near Bwindi is possible.
