Location of Rushaga Bwindi Sector

Rushaga sector/trailhead is located in the Southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and offers more than normal mountain gorilla treks. The region is also the only one where mountain gorilla habituation is conducted.

Visitors require a valid gorilla permit to engage in a trek to engage in a gorilla trek in Rushaga and a single permit is issued at USD 800 per person for foreign nonresidents. The foreign residents pay USD 700 per visitor, USD 500 for the Rest of Africa, and the East African residents pay UGX 30,000 per visitor.

Gorilla Habituation Experience

The gorilla habituation experience offers a long day excursion where visitors spend a great time following the unhabituated gorilla families.

The main aim behind gorilla habituation is to make gorillas get used to human presence. Visitors to Rushaga gorilla habituation experience enjoy up to 4 hours face-to-face with mountain gorilla.

You can obtain a valid gorilla habituation permit at USD 1500 per person for the visitor category of foreign nonresidents, USD 1000 for all foreign residents, and Ugandans/East African residents/Citizens are charged UGX 750,000.

The birds to expect to spot during the birding excursions in Rushaga include collared apalis, purple-breasted sunbird, African harrier hawks, yellow-eyed black flycatchers, black bee-eaters, handsome francolins, strange weaver birds, and grey cuckoo shrike.

Other birds include black-faced rufous warblers, Archer’s robin chat, African green broadbill, Shelley’s greenbul, and more.

What is the best time to visit the Rushaga region

The dry season is the best time to travel to explore the Rushaga region for gorilla trekking and other activities. The dry months begin from June, July, August to September, and another phase starts from December, January, to February. Visitors can also travel and explore Rushaga and its wonders even around the wet season.

The wet season is also regarded as the off-season and runs from March to May then October to November. The disadvantage of the wet or off-season is that it comes with heavy rains with the ground kept wet or muddy thus posing a huge challenge for visitors to enjoy a guided hike.

How to reach the Rushaga sector

Planning to explore the Rushaga sector in Bwindi and you aren’t sure about how to get there? There are two options for visitors to connect to Rushaga and that is by road or air.

By road, expect to spend about 8-9 hours driving from Entebbe or Kampala via Masaka-Mbarara city. Or drive from Kigali city via Katuna/Chanika to Rushaga about 4-5 hours’ drive.

By air, you can have access to Southwestern Uganda within 1-2 hours. You take a flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrip.
