John Hanning Speke and River Nile
River Nile- the longest river in the world was first seen by John Hanning Speke, who was an officer in the British Indian Army and made three exploratory expeditions to Africa. He marched from Tabora to the site of present –day Mwaza in the year 1858 following his joint discovery of Lake Tanganyika- Africa’s deepest lake, with Richard Burton, the previous year.
The main goal of Speke and burton trip was to solve the great geographical paradox of the age, the source of the Nile. Basing on Speke’s brief sight of the South east corner of Lake Victoria, slightly creatively proclaimed his discovery to the answer to the riddle and Burton, with a similar comparable lack of undoubted suggestion, was then convinced that the great river flowed out of Lake Tanganyika. The declaration of river Nile by John Speke made him get mixed support back home from his home while burton on the other sceptics however pointed out that John speke had by passed the entire western shore of his alleged great lake had visited only a couple of points on the Northern shore and had not attempted to explore the east Nor, for that matter, had followed the course of the Nile in its entirety. Speke, claimed his critics, had seen several different lakes and different stretches of river, connected only in Speke’s deluded mind. The sceptics had a point, but Speke had never the less gathered sufficient geographical evidence to render his claim highly plausible.
Far as August 1874, which was the year after Speke’s death, Stanely who was a close associate embarked on a three-year expedition every bit as remarkable and arduous as those undertaken by his predecessors, yet one whose significance is often overlooked. Partially, this was because Stanley grazes such an unfeeling figure, the edge caricature of the murderous pre-colonial White man blasting and buttering his way through, territories where burton, Speke, Burton living stone about the Nile source. Firstly, Stanley sailed around the circumference of Lake Victoria, establishing that it was indeed as vast as Speke had claimed. Stanley’s next was to cirmumvigate lake Victoria Tanganyika which centrally to Burton’s.
