Residents fail to find the chimps which kidnapped and killed a boy
Following an unbelievable incidence which occurred last week when the chimpanzee raided one of the homes in Muhorro town council in Kibale district and killed one boy, the residents have failed to find the primates that committed the offence. It may sound unrealistic but its true and these news shocked very many people in the world especially tourists who were near the area on their Uganda safari.
How the chimpanzees attacked the family
The whole incidence happened last Sunday at around 2:00PM when one family just like any other homes in the area was enjoying a late lunch. This family said to be headed by Zabroni Semata had just finished their garden work and had just completed clearing the fields for a new harvest. As they were having lunch, one of the children asked his mother for some drinking water. The mother rushed to get some water from a jerrycan which was about 6 meters away from the point where the family was feasting from. On looking back, she saw a group of chimpanzees merging from the nearby bush which hurriedly grabbed two of the kids and quickly ran with them. The mother shouted for help and the chimpanzees dropped one of the kids. However, another kid known as Mujuni was unlucky as the chimpanzees quickly disappeared with him to the bushes. It is said that the chimps undressed him and hit him so hard on the lower part of the abdomen exposing the kidney. The child’s head was severely banged and the skull got damaged. By the time residents came to rescue, the chimps had disappeared and Mujuni was lying on the ground in pain. They tried to rush him to hospital but unfortunately, he died along the way.
This angered the residents who gathered their spears and pangas and started hunting for the killer chimps but failed to get them. They searched everywhere in the bush and all they saw was one chimpanzee which also disappeared in the near-by sugar plantation.
On hearing this, the Uganda Wildlife Authority members rushed to the area where the killing took place and they tried to calm down the local people who had vowed to kill all the wild animals in the area. They tried to teach them the dangers of killing these chimps stating that they help the government to get revenue from tourists who visit Uganda simply to look at these rare primates. This calmed down the residents and the Uganda Wildlife Authority is trying to find ways of stopping such incidences from occurring.
Uganda is mainly known for harboring such primates, the chimpanzees and the rare mountain gorillas and most of the tourists come to track them in their natural habitats. It is this reason that UWA treasures them and protects them from being killed by local people who claim that they destroy their gardens.
