Detailed itinerary 11 Days Gorilla Trekking Bwindi
Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Kampala
On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be picked by our driver/guide for transfer to Kampala City (about 40 kilometers away). Overnight and dinner will be at Yellow Haven Lodge.
Day 2: Drive to Murchison Falls National Park and hike to the top of the falls
Have breakfast from the Lodge then be driven to Murchison Falls National Park. It’s not a direct and boring journey but rather fascinating with stopovers with one being at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (in Nakasongola) for a 2hours’ track of Uganda’s only surviving wild rhino population before proceeding until Masindi for a lunch break.
You will arrive in the evening and head to the top of the falls for photography. Dinner and overnight will be at Paraa Safari Lodge (luxury), Heritage Safari Lodge (midrange) or Red Chilli Rest Camp (budget) while the meal plan is full board.
Day 3: Morning Game drive and afternoon boat cruise
Have breakfast of tea/coffee as well as cereals, fresh organic fruits and juice then proceed for a game drive where if lucky you will spot the lions, leopards and other animals such as buffaloes, elephants, antelopes and giraffes among others. This activity usually lasts 3-4 hours and then go back to the Lodge for relax and have lunch while waiting for the next activity.
There will be a launch cruise along the Nile River to the base of the falls where you will enjoy the sights and sounds of large Nile crocodiles, hippos, antelopes, buffaloes and elephants along the banks as well as a number of beautiful bird species including the elusive shoebill stork, Kingfishers, Pelicans and African fish eagles among others.
Dinner and overnight will be at Paraa Safari Lodge (luxury), Heritage Safari Lodge (midrange) or Red Chilli Rest Camp (budget) while the meal plan is full board.
Day 4: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park
Have breakfast and leave Murchison Falls National Park for Kibale Forest National Park (the primate Capital of the World) through the magnificent Albertine Rift as well as the Bugungu Wildlife Reserve while relishing the jaw-dropping views of the countryside before having a stopover in Hoima Town for lunch.
Arrive the Park in the evening and check in at Kyaninga Lodge (for luxury), Chimps Nest Lodge (for midrange) or Chimpanzee Guesthouse (for budget) where you will also have dinner.
Day 5: Chimpanzee habituation experience
Have breakfast and continue to the Kanyanchu visitor center as early as 6:00am for an all-day chimpanzee habituation Experience. Unlike chimpanzee tracking where you will spend only one hour with the habituated chimpanzee community.
You will be able to spend the whole day with a community that is still undergoing habituation to watch them wake up, forage, groom, play and finally nest in the evening before setting off. Return for overnight and dinner at Kyaninga Lodge (luxury), Chimps Nest Lodge (midrange) or Chimpanzee Guesthouse (budget).
Day 6: Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park and boat cruise
On the 6th day you will transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park but before that, you will first have a hot cup of coffee or tea. The journey involves passing through the cool Fort Portal Town where lunch will be had as well as the magnificent landscapes of the Ruwenzori Mountains.
Arrive the Park and head straight for a boat cruise where you will see hippos, crocodiles as well as bird species. Overnight and dinner is at Mweya Safari Lodge (luxury), Enganzi Game Lodge (midrange) or Kazinga Channel View Resort (budget) while the meal plan is full board.
Day 7: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park through the Ishasha sector
Enjoy a delicious breakfast and drive slowly through the Park to get a chance of seeing different wildlife species such as the Uganda Kobs, Topis, buffaloes, waterbucks, elephants and warthogs and continue to the southern Ishasha sector to see the legendary tree climbing lions.
Lunch will be at Savannah Resort Hotel (Kihihi) before proceeding to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Buhoma sector). Meal plan is full board while dinner and overnight will be at Buhoma Lodge for luxury, Engagi Lodge for midrange or Buhoma Community Rest Camp for budget.
Day 8: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi and community visit (optional) or relaxation
Since gorilla trekking starts as early as 8:00am, you will be expected to wake up early for breakfast and continue to the Park Headquarters with your packed lunch, walking stick, drinking water and backpack for pre-tracking briefing at 7:00am.
You will then continue to the thick jungles of Bwindi characterized by thick forest covered by mist to search for the gorilla family and this takes from one hour to over 6 hours to find them. Once sighted, you will spend only one hour with the gorilla family to study their behavior and take photos before proceeding to the Lodge for relaxation.
You can relax through the evening but if you are still energetic or if time allows, you will continue for a cultural walk to Batwa villages to see how they lived in the forest before eviction and be entertained in their traditional dances.
Dinner and overnight is at Buhoma Lodge for luxury, Engagi Lodge for midrange or Buhoma Community Rest Camp for budget while the meal plan is full board.
Day 9: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi and relax by its shores
After breakfast comprising of Uganda’s freshest fruits, cereals as well as coffee/tea, you will be transferred to Lake Bunyonyi, one of the deepest fresh water Lakes in Africa and a place of many little birds.
While here, you can choose to swim in the Bilharzia-free waters, or bird watching, community walk or canoeing to experience the true beauty of south-western Uganda. Dinner and overnight is at Birdnest@Bunyonyi Resort while the meal plan is breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 10: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park and boat cruise.
The day starts with breakfast, followed by a transfer to Uganda’s smallest savannah National Park where you will get the chance to see the beautiful zebras, giraffes, elands, impalas and buffaloes among others. The drive involves transversing the breathtaking terraced hills of Kibale and have lunch in Mbarara.
You will arrive in the afternoon and head straight for a boat cruise where Nile crocodiles, hippos and aquatic birds can be spotted. Dinner and overnight will be at Mihingo Lodge (for luxury), Rwakobo Rock (for midrange) or Sky blue Motel (for budget) while the meal plan on this day is breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 11: Nature walk/or horse ride and departure
You will be woken by the sounds of the singing birds and have breakfast before heading for a nature walk to explore the beauty of the Park comprising of tree species, wildlife and bird species. Alternatively, you can go for a horse ride (if you are staying at Mihingo Lodge).
Thereby checkout of the Lodge and leave for Kampala with a stopover at the equator for photos as well as buying souvenirs. You will then head to Entebbe International Airport for your return flight.
