The 4 Days Rwanda Chimpanzee Safari allows you to immerse yourself into the lush rainforest of Nyungwe National Park in search for our closest relatives –the chimpanzees. The key safari highlights as per this primate tour package include chimpanzee tracking, colobus monkey tracking and canopy walk.

4 Days Rwanda Chimpanzee SafariChimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park typically involves active trekking through the rainforest with an experienced guide. Within Nyungwe National Park alone, there exist over 500 chimpanzees and treks to see these apes start from Uwinka or Cyamudongo section.

The entire chimpanzee trek adventure in Nyungwe Forest is intended to enrich you with more information about chimpanzees while in their natural habitat. This includes observing their daily behaviors, body gestures and taking pictures.

A canopy walk in Nyungwe National Park is one of its kind experience in the entire East African region. The Nyungwe canopy walk takes you through the suspended canopy walkway set about 50m from the ground and by length, cover 200m while spotting primates and birds.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is the biggest tropical rainforest park in Rwanda, gazetted in 2004 and spans over 970sq.km. Over 13 primate species, 310 species of birds, and plenty of other species all call Nyungwe their home.

Detailed Itinerary – 4 Days Rwanda Chimpanzee Safari:

Day 1: Enjoy Kigali city tour & transfer to Nyungwe by road via Butare/Huye.

Get a warm welcome from your professional Rwanda driver guide in Kigali. A short briefing will be done where you will have insight about your memorable trip to explore Nyungwe. Begin your day with an enriching Kigali city tour and this includes exploring the Kigali genocide memorial.

The Kigali genocide site is a burial site where 250,000 victims of the 1994 Rwanda genocide were all laid. After the city tour, you will be transferred to Nyungwe, 6-7 hours’ drive but en-route, expect to make a stopover at the Ethnographic Museum and Kings palace.

Lunch break will also be had at Butare/Huye and proceed to check in at the pre-booked accommodation inside or around Nyungwe Forest NP.

Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking & chill at the lodge.

Expect to get up early in the morning to prepare for your mesmerizing chimpanzee trekking adventure. First, enjoy a delicious cup of tea/coffee and after, your driver guide will transfer you to either Uwinka or Cyamudongo sector to get briefed about chimpanzee trekking rules and regulations.

A trek to see Nyungwe chimpanzees is slightly strenuous and requires some level of fitness. The park’s elevation ranges from 1600 to 2950m and Mount Bigugu is its highest peak. Once you have come across a community of habituated chimpanzees, your park guide will grant you only an hour. During this special 1 hour, observe how chimpanzees behave and their unique body gestures, etc.

You will begin walking back to the briefing area after an hour of magical interaction with our closest relatives.  Use the rest of the time to chill at the lodge and sharing your long day adventure memories.

Note, besides chimpanzees, expect to see variety of other species that freely roam in the scenic Nyungwe Forest including colobus monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, birds, and floral species.

Day 3: Colobus monkey tracking & canopy walk.

A leisurely breakfast be had at the lodge and after, you will catch up with the morning briefing. Today, you will be part of the enriching colobus monkey tracking adventure with an experienced park guide in Nyungwe National Park.

Rwanda canopy walkOver 400 colobus monkeys live peacefully with the rest of other faunal, avifaunal and floral species in Nyungwe Forest NP. You will have a deep understanding of colobus monkey daily behaviors and also get a chance to capture the best shorts of these primates while in their natural habitat.

In the afternoon when you are done enjoying lunch, catch up with the guided canopy walk experience. This will start from Uwinka area Igishigishigi trail and involves walking through 200m long canopy walkway.

Day 4: Departure.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your respective accommodation and later check out. After, you will exit Nyungwe for Kigali, 6-7 hours’ drive and on arrival, you may continue to the hotel for relaxation or direct to Kigali airport for departure.
