There are different routes on Mt. Elgon but the quickest route to its highest peak (Wagagai 4321m) is the Sasa trail. The trek through Sasa trail begin from Bumasola Village (1770m) up to Wagagai peak. Mount Elgon is Africa’s 4th highest mountain and this volcano features the world’s largest caldera with diameter measuring up to 80km. At its base, this volcano is occupied by the Sabiny and Gisu tribes.

Detailed Itinerary – 4 Days Mount Elgon Hiking Safari:
Day 1: Pick up & transfer to Mt. Elgon National Park by road.
This day is dedicated for you to travel to Budadiri Village where your trek on Mt. Elgon will begin the next day. Drive off along the Kampala-Jinja highway and en-route, expect to make a short stopover at Ssezibwa waterfalls in Mukono. From Ssezibwa, proceed via a scenic route and as you navigate via Mabira Forest, enjoy the refreshing air from the natural rainforest.
Other en-route insights not to be missed include the beautiful views of extensive sugarcane plantations and later, you will cross the Nile River through the newly constructed bridge. From Jinja, continue up to the lodge or hotel around Budadiri.
Day 2: Transfer to Mount Elgon NP gate, hike to Mude Cave Camp (3500m).
Get up early from your place of stay, have a cup of tea or coffee and after, connect up to the Sasa trail at Bumasola Villa (1770m). The Sasa trail is known for its enriching experience and today, you will begin your trek via the surrounding farms and village till the perimeter of Mount Elgon National Park.
Proceed with your walk through the metal stairs as you scale up the Mudange cliffs (2290m) also most referred to as “Wall of Death.” Make a stopover at the Sasa River Camp (2900m) for lunch break and later proceed via the pure mountain forest. As you ascend, expect to come across some monkeys.
Your next stop will be at Sasa Patrol Hut (3300m) for registration then embark on another phase of hike via scenic giant lobelia, lichen and flowers. Arrive at Mude Cave Camp (3500m) where you will set your net for relaxation and night stay.
Day 3: From Mude Cave Camp to Wagagai peak (4321m), descend back to Sasa River Camp.
Leave your campsite for final ascend to the Wagagai peak. Hike via the alpine zone till you get to the lip of Mt. Elgon’s caldera. In between, you will have snack break at Jackson’s table while also viewing the Jackson’s peak (4165m). Continue with your walk till you get to the summits and key area of interest will be the Wagagai peak to the east end of caldera’s ridge.
After taking pictures, begin descending back while viewing the scenic surroundings including parts of Mt Kenya. Get back to Mude Cave Camp for lunch and have your items packed ready to descend further to Sasa River Camp for relaxation and night stay.
Day 4: Sasa River Camp-Budadiri.
Have hefty breakfast and after, start with descending back to Bumasola taking the steep slope. Take keen attention on the steep slope as you walk and once you have reached the briefing point, proceed to Budadiri office then get back to Kampala.
